FAQ

What is sport and performance psychology?

Sport and performance psychology is the study of human behavior in performance settings. Performance settings often involve a respective set of skills, a desired outcome, and obstacles that make the desired outcome challenging to achieve. These circumstances subsequently produce stress. Therefore, sport and performance psychology concerns how we manage stress during performance to achieve desired outcomes.

What is mental skills training?

Mental skills training encompasses a large range of skills that influences our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual state of being. Common examples of mental skills are breathing techniques, imagery, self-talk, self-awareness, mindfulness, refocusing, and reframing – to name a few! Mental skills are most effective when purpose is assigned (individual meaning), a specific focus, and are repeatable.

How is this applicable to my sport and life?

The mind is limitless. It has an uncanny ability to influence our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual states. Mental skills training surpasses the performance settings we often think of when applying these skills, such as sport or a high stress situation. We can adopt these skills to our daily endeavors. Stress occurs throughout our day. There is no need to limit mental skills training to sport or high performance. Mental skills training can influence our daily endeavors.

What does a mental performance session look like?

Sessions involve active participation between both the consultant and client. Individualized methods to enhance performance are agreed upon and pursued through collaborative goal setting, deliberate self-reflection, and focused effort on the process of improvement. Sessions are often held in a private location, remotely, or on site of the client's respective performance setting.
